The STIG Story So Far

The Baltic 72 Grand Prix was designed by Rolf Vrolijk for the joint R&D project run by Baltic Yachts and her Italian owner Alessandro Rombelli. STIG was built in seven months to comply with the mini maxi IRC rules and race in the July 2012 Copa Audi Mapfre del Rey de Vela with the world's fastest mini maxis. Her ultra-light 72-foot hull and deck were built in pre-impregnated carbon epoxy sandwich laminate with Kevlar Honeycomb cores. As she emerged from the workshops at Bosund on June 14, she was rolled over into a tilt cradle and loaded to Chris Bugler’'s British-based ultra-low extending trailer, reducing her 6.0m beam to 5.0m overall and saving the project GBP 20,000.00 in freight costs. STIG arrived on time at the Real Club Náutico de Valencia on July 5 for racing off Palma de Mallorca on July 16.

Hauled 3,889 kilometres from the Gulf of Bothnia to the Mediterranean Sea, STIG reached Valencia in time
for the Copa del Rey and in line with a daring 7-month construction plan managed by Daniel Wahlroos
at Baltic Yachts Oy Ab Ltd and Silvio Arrivabene, Alessandro Rombelli’s naval architect and navigator.
Despite early technical problems STIG took third place in the Copa del Rey IRC 0 division behind Rán and Shockwave.

NAVIGARE NECESSE EST, VIVERE NON EST NECESSE
To sail is necessary, to survive is not necessary.

Attributed by Plutarch to Gnaeus Pompeius who sent sailors to sea in bad weather to bring grain from Africa to Rome.
